I bought a broken dental x-ray head Seller said that it is Ardet ( ) ORIX-70, but I think it can be rather ORIX-65, becouse it looks like there's no way to control the tube grid... How do you think? Here's the schematic of it (I'm only guessing what's inside the metal case)
I'm powering it with a variac. It behaves like a short circuit (draws a few amps @ several volts on primary), but the short circuit disappears after cutting the resistor. The cutted connection starts to arc over at some voltage on the variac so the HV transformer should be OK. Looks like the tube is shorted, but ... is it possible? Do you have any idea about it? And another question is how to open it so that (if I manage to repair it) it could be closed and made to work again? Should I drill a little hole in the metal and take out the oil first?
[edit] I opened the "window" of the head and it was possible to pour out the oil through it, so i did it. Now I have to open the can, but it doesn' seem to be easy :(

(Un)fortunately this is not the problem. The tube is not hermetic. It has some oil inside and starts to glow purple (low pressure discharge) after aplying about 10V on primary. This tube is a grid type in fact, but the grid was shorted with the filament ... The transformer is OK, but i don't have a use for it now :P Well, one day with messing up in oil and some money lost for nothing, sometimes it happens :( At least I have some lead for my old x-ray tube :P
