I wanted to pack away my Xenon arc ignitor but thought I better find out how it works first.
It comes from an 8kW 3 phase Xenon arc lamp ophthalmic photocoagulator. Examination and a bit of testing showed a circuit not unlike that of a Tesla coil. It has a 220 to 12kV transformer driving two 1000pF doorknob caps in a tank circuit with a spark gap. This drives a big epoxy coated coil to give the sparks rated at 50kV.
The sparks here are about 1 inch and you can see the multiply stacked gap firing as well.

The starters for the 2kW xenon lamps we used at the theatre had a very small transformer similar perhaps to an OBIT. A tank circuit off that then drove a small ferrite cored resonant coil similar in size to an automotive ignition coil. They had little adjustable spark gaps for the tank circuit.

Nice sparks. How powerful is the 12kV transformer in it?
Not sure about power or whether it is current limited. It is about 4x4x3 inches or so. It fires at 6kV and is not meant for continuous use. Actually open circuit voltage might be about 10kV as the name plate says 220V rated and puts out 4kV for 80V.
