I prefer to have safety first… at least with X-rays.

Okay I will try that, just to make a small Jacob’s ladder or something. The X-ray project has been canceled due to safety. I give a heart felt thanks to all who told me it would be a unsafe project. You may have saved my life. cry

Now wait just a dadgum second.

We (as a community, and I'm hoping this is not incredibly off topic, but I'll just be a moment) work with high voltage. Voltages that could kill instantly. I get RF burns from corona off a wire. I mean, what we do is relatively unsafe, but we take precautions- which in turn save us from a painful death.

Now, a small x-ray tube would not pose the greatest danger in the world to one's health if he/she were shielded adequately. This, especially with a small tube, should not be difficult. And you will probably not pick up more than a few rads from all of this, and quite possibly none at all. Less than astronauts get even.

Ok, stepping down from my soapbox, I hate to see a cool project die. I used to sit inches from the TV as a kid, I'm sure I picked up my share of radiation.

But don't let paranoia stomp on your curiosity.

And, so as not to stray completely away, I think that one guy was right about not needing to rectify the ICs, I believe that the x-ray tubes would act much like regular CRTs, but then again, I don't have too much experience with x-ray tubes. And your best bet would probably be to use 2 in the antiparalell config (whatever that is supposed to mean) with the PHASES all phased up, not polarity neccicarily.

And with ICs, the simpler the better, I always say. But what do I know.

I sware this ain't off topic, is it possible to "stack" the coils- so you have one going up from ground and another with the ground potential at the output of the first? I've only heard it done with flybacks, and with marginal results. That might be a little easier, though maybe not doable, and probably overstressing the thing. Cause if you had four coils at two stacks and you ran tem in "antiparalell" that might could do it.

Anyhow, good luck. Maybe have kids before you do this.

You see what happens when we can't lock threads tongue

I would personally have to side with Omicron's --if you don't know what you are doing, then you probably shouldn't be doing it at all.

Rave from the grave! suprised Someone want this thread locked?

King Of Junk, safety and liability is a complex and unpleasant mess. I often worry about whether 4hv and other forums like it encourage kids to do more dangerous things than they should. But on the other hand I worry that too much emphasis on safety has taken all the fun out of science. If you want to debate that, feel free to start a thread in the chatting board.
