"If you're on a budget, aren't MSD Blasters a bit expensive? I thought they were special high performance coils for racing engines."
Yes they are, but they seem to be the only way to get around 40,000 I need for the tube.
"The X-ray tube should act as a rectifier, so you shouldn't need any diodes, just connect one ignition coil to each end (being sure to get the polarities right) and stand well back"
Poles, but the ignition coil is ac! How am I to do that?
So Steve all I should do is hook up output from an ordinary ignition coil driver and that will work? No diodes or anything? If so then that is great!! Ps do you know if an ordanarey coil will work? I can get those for dirt cheap.
"It took me very little effort to find this. Please don't ask us to check the RadioShack catalogues for you."
Sorry about that didn’t mean to course you trouble.

an ordinary coil should work fine. the voltage rating on an ignition coil is a very subjuctive thing, omst poeple get much more than that out of them-just depends on how you drive them.

Really? Hi Ho Hi HO it’s off too the junk yard I go!
But Steve said right poles. Ac has no permanent poles.
Does any one have a really good driver that would work? Needs around 40KV.

Try my "Bastard Ignition Coil Driver From Hell" (BICDFH)
The circuit diagram is on the old forums. It's just a 555 and an MJ10012 iggy transistor, and is peppered with protection to stop the 555 and intermediate transistor getting cooked etc.
Runs at 50V and usually gave me up to 60kV per coil when tweaked properly.

It is AC but it will have more of a "Kick" in one direction than the other. So:
The coils must be wired in opposite polarities or the outputs will cancel each other instead of adding together and nothing will happen. You can easily test that by making sure you get a big hot arc between the outputs.
The tube must be connected the right way round between the outputs, such that the part of the waveform with the biggest kick is what powers the tube. The easiest way to test that, I guess, is to put a milliamp meter (old fashioned pointer kind) in series with the tube, try both polarities, and see which gives the highest current.

It may be a try to feed the tube with actual AC; you will get some x rays that way too, yust connect the tube in right orientatin to IC.
Selenium rectifiers can only stand 26v per junction if I remember right, so they'll surely be far more bulk and hassle than 1N4007s (800v)
Ugh, no. They are for small current but with only few of them you can rectify to 40kV DC. Can be found in old TVs or bought (cheaply), usually rated 18kV few mA...
Bag of 1N4007s may be around same price in total but pain to solder hundred(s) of them in series.
Couple of seriesed MO diodes may work as well.
When rectifying care must be taken not to rectify 'weaker' spike of AC output. Filtering can be done with few bottle caps. This way you dont get some pulsed but CW xray emmision, depends on your needs...

just out of curoisity, how much current is your tube rated for? I have a 30kv (should handle 40kv just fine) vacume rectifier tube... But it is only designed for 1ma tube current :(

I will have that tomorrow when United Nuclear starts taking calls again.
