thank you , i have seen those sites and have read alot more on the subject but cant seem too find out how well it works in the real world from home built parts ! also ive been playing with my own plan from a modded stun gun in place of a capacitor bank/spark gap !

On the second link vasil gave the guy encased the magnetrons output in a metal "wave guide" and at the end, the metal can is where the object to be microwaved is put. I see he puts a screen mesh over the top when he microwaved the light bulb but what about the fluorescent light. I don't see any shielding so won't the microwaves reflect off the metal until they come out of the opening?

Yes, I think the microwaves will come out of that setup with the fluorescent lamp.
I don't know why he bothered making a new microwave chamber, when every magnetron you get comes with a nice chamber with proper RF shielding, a wire mesh window for viewing, and the right size and shape of waveguides to match it to the magnetron for maximum nukeage. Just clean the burrito stains off the window and you're good to go
I guess his setup is pretty inefficient: the fluorescent tube, neon lamp and light bulb would all explode violently in a normal microwave oven. But still, I would prefer to use an old microwave oven as the experiment chamber and reduce the power using a variac, than put full power to the magnetron and waste most of it by poor matching.
Simple microwave experiments:
*Use a damp sheet of fax paper to see the standing wave pattern inside an oven (remove the turntable) *Put a lit candle or burning toothpick in the oven to create plasma balls (doesn't always work) *Make your own lava by heating a rock with a propane torch till it's red hot in one spot, then microwaving it on full power until it melts completely. (make sure to put it in some extremely heat-proof container!) Why do you need to start it with the torch? This experiment is dangerous. *Microwave a CD and be amazed as it disintegrates in a shower of sparks *Put your cell phone in the microwave and close the door (but don't turn the oven on!!!) Call it and see if it rings. Isn't that oven supposed to stop radio waves getting in and out?
Most of these experiments ought to be done in an old junker microwave oven to save ruining a good one.

Just leave the magnetron where it is, dont kill yourself with messing with it. The only interesting addition is using a seperate transformer for the magnetron filament (like 3.5v 15A) and two power cables, one going to the filament transformer and the cooler (plugged in directly) and one (going to the original interlock switches/stuff/HV transformer, leave it as is) connected to a variac. This way you can nicely control the microwave power so the lamps and so dont explode.
In all cases, dont attempt to modify the microwave chamber or use the magentron without it, its very dangerous.

the best experiments ive seen on the subject was at voltsamps but that site has removed all content why i dont know but it does work !!! ive been playing with HERF and im finding that alot of GOOD site's have removed content ,that really sucks because you cant build from thier mistakes if you cant read it !!! must be a conspiracy LOL !!! i think some kid microwaved his balls !
im thinking about useing a E2V Technologies 4kW Gen4 X-band magnetron in my experiments but would like to bounce some thoughts with someone else thats played with homebrew HERF !!!

Ball lightning has been mentioned, but an easier way to do it is:
1. Make a coil of 5-10 turns of ~30awg, and space the ends closely. 2. Place a small peice of cardboard(1/8" by 1/8" is good) between the spaced electrodes, and tape it in. 3. Place in the microwave, and power up.
What happens is the coil turns the microwaves back to electricity, and arcs through the carboards, making a little smoke, and some ball lightning. I too would like to see the 4kw magnetron.
