This actually sounds plausible, though I find the "levitates indefinitely" part a bit hard to believe.

Anyone else heard of this?
It looks like the majority of the parts needed are available- old fluorescent lighting capacitors have aluminised mylar as the plates and you can get PVC pipe and/or styrofoam nearly anywhere.

you could always try it
parts needed aren't so much
* Tinsel (a thin strip of aluminized mylar about 30 cm long)
* PVC tubing (1/2 inch or 3/4 inch)
* wool (You can get wool cheap at used clothing stores, wash it and dry it well.)

you could always try it...
* plastic drinking straws
* scissors

I made a similar experiments (electrostatic levitation), using two vynil record discs.Put the discs (one on another) on the table, and rub the surface of the upper disc with a textile (even with bare dry hand), until you hear the crackling sound. Keepin the upper discs only on margings, separate the discs (15-20 cm between them). You can then introduce little alu foil pieces between the discs (better making some blobs from the alu foil, not spherical, but ovoidal, with two conic extremities) and they will levitate between the discs for some time. :)
Keep the disc only on border, do not touch the outer or inner surface.

Indefinitely is not too hard to believe, it had been worse if it was infinitely. It looks quite fun, remember that things like this works much better in dry air.

I would think ballancing anything on an charged wand would be very difficult. Does the fact thats the ring has some flext make it easier to keep up?

Objects that have low density are usually fairly simple to balance because air resistance makes them move slowly.

I tried it and yep, it works great. smile humidity is your worst enemy, do it in an air conditioned room.

I suppose for the tinsel it would be easiest to slaugher a small metalized film capacitor?
