So while building my first coil in a very long time I got sidetracked with the (DR)SSTC discussions and musical coils....
When an opportunity arose to get my hands on 2 complete sets of MiniBrute boards w/ Advanced Modulator boards for a good price I took it as a sign to abandon my SGTC and get all ADD on an SSTC.

I'm about 3 weeks into the build and finally have a few things to show for it. Please let me know what you think, and if you see ANYTHING that you questions please let me know ASAP as I am a real SSTC novice and I'm sure I'll make a few mistakes. The boards Dan McCauley makes are top notch and I highly recommend them.

So now for some pics, with captions:

Mainboard
Main Resonant Driver Board. Tested by itself on Friday night and everything tested as it should according to the design ref book.

Display
The display panel. I have the LEDs but am waiting to figure out how I want to mount everything before I finalize the display board.

Mmc
MMC... nuff said I think. I know I forgot to cut the rectifier board loose...whatever

Board
Advanced Modulator is complete minus the pots which for some reason I thought I had already...I'll put it together when I need the modulator.

Gdt
My GDT. I'm not too sure this is right - I think I'm missing anout a turn on each side.... but I'll get that when I solder it to the half bridge board. I haven't assembled it yet (well, I have, but no IGBTs, no GDT, and no heatsink )

Workbench
This is where I am putting this together. I need to clean up a bit now that the soldering is done, mostly.

Oldscope
The old scope I dug up for testing. it's ancient, but it works fine. Glad I finally have a working scope :)

Panellayout
Top panel layout - measure 4 times drill once....

Cuttingsupports
Cutting supports from some teflon stock.

Primarysupports
Glad I measured 4 times instead of just twice - everything fits together perfectly.

...and that's all I have pictures of at the moment. I still have to wind my primary and secondary coils, build the lower 2/3rd of the case and mount everything. As you can probably tell I have parts to build 2 full coils.....take 2 will be much more refined I hope.

More pics as I progress.

The teflon stock must be pricey. Be careful that it doesn't get too hot or catch fire, for the sake of fumes. wink

Its all looking very good!...Greysoul
yes.... Dan's boards are very professional looking!
What coil dimensions do you plan to make?

My only advice would be to place the bus storage caps
on your half bridge, as close as possible to your bridge,
i had spike issues with my first DRSSTC, as my caps at the time were
a good 10 inches away from my bridge.

All the best with your project!
i look forward to watching its progress!

Mel.

I get scrap plastic for $2/lb no matter what it is. I like teflon because it's not very dense, so I get a good deal on it. That's probably all of $3 worth of teflon (fopr me anyways). Also, I could have used HDPE but it has pretty nasty fumes as well, and teflon has a much higher temp rating. I know about the fumes, but I'm gonna be running this attended at all times, I'll catch the smoke before fire and clear the area :P

One nice side benefit of teflon, it makes threading the primary super easy :P

Anyways, coil is gonna be 8" primary 6 turns, and a 18" x 4.5" secondary wound with #28 or #30 wire... I have to do some math still to figure out what I need.
