For my first tesla coil I'm working from designs from a book, however in the book they use a single capacitor and I was hoping to substitute it for a MMC. The book suggests using .005mfd/10KVAC capacitor so could I just get ten .15mfd/2KV capacitors and set those up in a capacitor bank and substitute that for the single cap?

If not how would I determine the quantity of capacitors that I need and also what would be the best ones to get? If it's important I'm using a 6.5KV/20ma transformer.

You should use an mmc as it's reliable/proven/economical

For 6.5kV 20mA you'd be better using 10 to 15 nF (0.01 to 0.015 uF)
which is (10 to 15) x .15mF giving a nice safety margin for voltage ratings.

Just to double check so that I don't end up buying the wrong thing, would these work?

I've always been one to push the 942 series of caps from CDE. They are very tolerant of overvolting and survive VERY VERY nicely on pulse discharge curcuits!
