Well, I will admit that my junk box is a bit better stocked than most after getting in on a part of a company's (that I now work for) downsizing, but regardless I didn't buy a single component to build this...
I am working on the Rev3 of my GPS tracking system, and as a part of that I got loured to the dark side and ended up using a accelerometer in a leadless QFN package, which needs to be soldered in using some type of indirect heating (ie, hot air). So then I had no choise but to build a hot air station.
So I dug up a heater for a hot air station, hacked him into a variac and a little air compressor, and we had hot air. But why stop there? Then I added a microscope so I could see what I was doing, and then I moved over the x-y stage from my laser obliterator, and then a dremel tool with a .020" drill for doing vias, a few cameras, etc...
BTW, if you have never used hot air for soldering, you are missing out... I can do stuff with a bit of solder paste and air than I could dream of doing with my iron peter
