As a part of my ongoing endavour to produce insanely high voltages I put this thing together last night:

1141288388 75 FT0 Dscn4044

It's a 9 stage CW consisting of 1nF 10kV capacitors and 15kV diodes, with all the conections covered up with brass spheres. I hope that this will limit conrona enough so I can run it in air.
Not tested yet for lack of a suitable high voltage source - a flyback is going to produce much more than 7kV rms and therefore will immediately blow the capacitors. I think I'll also want more current than a flyback can reasonably supply, so I'll probably wind my own transformer for this. If only I could get my halfbridge or ZVS driver to work.

You need 3.5kVrms NOT 7kVrms because
each stage will reach dc voltage equal to the
peak-to-peak input voltage.

Perhaps a MOT with alot of ballasting would work for you. I have enough of them that I can get 2-10kv in any arangement of powerlevles.

good point Sulaiman, thi would just save me time winding the transformer. I suspect I might be better of redoing the wohe thing for 30kV per stage though, I think efficiency is going to suck with so many stages.

A MOT is going to be no good for this, at 50Hz I might be able to put 800mW through the CW if I am lucky, but not the 800W the MOT is rated for.

EDIT: I got the thing working now, I am using a single-layer secodary on a flyback core, driven by the ZVS circuit. I get more than 5cm arcs out, which I think is pretty much the maximum I will ever get from this. Now I just need to put more power through this, so I can use it to charge up my Marx gen.

One month later...
Cut down to three stages rated at 30kV each, this provides for a much better throughput of power. Driving with a flyback of 10kV rms or so, it produces an estimated 2*3*1.4*10kV= 80kV.

1144326260 75 FT1630 1144055048 75 Ft2860 Dscn4120

I had to increase the space between the components as I had corona actually kill on of mz capacitors.
The red thing, btw, is a water resistor to protect the diodes.

Pictures:

Overhead sheet placed on the topload (negative polarity) and grounded wire near it. Surface tracking distance is a total of more than 20cm back and forth.

    Another shot, two second exposure:

    1144055282 75 FT2860 Crop

new OHP sheet, after the first one got punctured. Still I am impressed how much voltage they can stand.

Oh, and a funny side node: After I had switched the generator off and discharged all the capacitors, I picked up the OHP sheet because I wanted to see if it was still charged. It was! A bright, nested flash extended something like 10cm around my thumb and index finger, and discharged the surface charge with a painfull snap. Wow! Even after that, the sheet had still enough charge that when I placed aluminium foils on both sides, they were charged up to several kV and I could discharge them with a small bang. Fun!

Unexpected capacitors can be fun and VERY painful dicoveries. I had the glass of a 60w light bulb charge up enough that my arm tiwtched when it discharged into my thumb.
