hi all, since i have got my flyback working, i was wanting to make a tesla coil with it. i have seen some vids on youtube of them, with impressive results. i have wound a secondary that is on pvc pipe and it's diameter is 50mm and it is 160mm tall. i have about 10 10kv 100pf ceramic caps. does this sound like a workable tesla coil?

I made a small flyback Tesla coil, see here: Link2 With no calculations and it produced a little corona, thats all.

ah, i see, you used a syringe for the secondary. maybe if you made a bigger secondary you would get better results? anyone thing my secondary, capacitors and flyback ideas work?

Well, I wound a smaller secondary but with much thinner wire so it has about 800 turns as apposed to about 200 and the performance was much worse.

Im no expert, but I think your idea will work.

I built a small SG Tesla coil powered by a zvs fly back and got 6" arcs for caps take the HV caps from 10 computer monitors and make a mmc for around 10KV and .02uf or some bottle caps for the secondary use 1" by 5" and primary cu wire here is mine it takes some tunning though and you do want a saifty gap with a powerful fan.

ok so you do get streamers. so my 10kv 100pf caps, flyback and secondary that i posted above would work?

yes but you should run some simulations to tune it you get much better results I only got corona until I tuned mine

Hi all. i am new to this site and this is my first post.
Anyway...

I have built 2 sgtc's so far and they both use a flyback hv source. Im surprised on how well my second one performs. it uses a 6" sec (1-1/8"dia) and an 8 turn tapped flat spiral primary. I use a small ~2" dia "doorknob" for the toroid. With no target ground, it will produce some very nice 5" streamers. When there is a target i get about 7-8" arcs that get kind of hot. It uses an adjustable rotary SG with 4x 590pF 30kV caps. the flyback driver is a half bridge circuit found here http://www.scopeboy.com/tesla/flyback.html (555 driven one 2nd from bottom. Input power during a run is about 280watts. The only advantage i have is that i have a huge flyback xformer, but with the halfbridge i got almost the same results with a 'normal', smaller flyback.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xUpGH7kSeFs < check it. i have since replaced this secondary with one of equal size, but thinner wire (and no breaks smile ) and have gotten longer streamers than in the video.

i think it all depends on how your driving your flyback. I've been through 3 different drivers and this Hbridge seems to work the best. i want to see someone use a ZVS driver like you see on youtube with those fat arcs to drive a coil. that would be nice.

good luck.
