On my fiance's computer, there is only one lineout, no headphone output, no anything else.

What I want to do is have a small box, and from the computer, and mini-jack to the box, and have her be able to plug her headphones and speakers into the box.

With a siwtch, I should be able to switch L&R channels w/o problems and leave the grounds connected at all times, but my question is, is the added resistance of the switch going to cause problems w/ the output? Do I need to also remove the ground from say the headphones while the speakers are on?

Are there any glaringly obvious things I am not seeing?

If it is line out only then you can drive powered speakers
but not headphones or passive loudspeakers directly,
if it does drive headphones or passive speakers then it's
a speaker output jack.
Some sound cards have jumpers on them to choose between
high quality LINE out
or poorer quality SPEAKER out.

To answer your question;

If the jack is SPEAKER out then what you intend will work,
no need to switch the earth wires.
You'll need a 2-pole 2-way switch...just about any will do.

If it's LINE out then buy a cheap pair of amplified speakers
choose a set that has a headphone jack and you're done!

EDIT
You will probably find a set of powered PC speakers cheaper than
the cost of a box with switches wires and connectors.

Adding the switch won't hurt anything :)

Have you tried using headphones with the jack? Most of the headphones I have used have high enough independence that they work with both speaker and line outs (I use line/speaker outs interchangeably). Although I do always use low power ear bud type earphones...

Don't worry about switching grounds, just use a dpdt switch that switches the r/l channels.

Yeah, they both work perfectly. It's just that she switches them quite often, headphones for voice communications, or listening to music at night, and speakers during the day. It just gets old having to switch it every time for her :)
