Attatched to this thread there are the simulations of 5 stages of my new microcontroller-driven pistol.

The preliminary simulations done with the simple model (proiectile as dipole moving in a magnetic field) using the same simulation parameters shows good agreement when using custom B-H curve with interpolation with the FEMM results.
The snubbing resistance was chosen ( 1 ohm) to limit the spike under the switch breakdown voltage (600V IGBT)

initial speed (injector) : 4.8 m/s
projectile weight 3.6g

Stage 1 spd: 27,21 m/s Kin: 1,33J eff: 3,29% on-time: 1240us
Stage 2 spd: 35,18 m/s Kin: 2,30J eff: 5,31% on-time: 520us
Stage 3 spd: 42,64 m/s Kin: 3,27J eff: 5,54% on-time: 440us
Stage 4 spd: 50,94 m/s Kin: 4,67J eff: 6,44% on-time: 380us
Stage 5 spd: 59,12 m/s Kin: 6,29J eff: 6,38% on-time: 360us
-------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------
total spd: 59,12 m/s Kin: 6,29J eff: 5,1% energy used: 124J

Comments, suggestions?

Sorry, I can't check the attachment from this computer.

Could you clarify exactly how you're doing these simulations? The results seem reasonable enough.

For the first used the simple model. The attachment contains FEMM simulation instead using a LUA script. Why arent you opening the simulations? they are simply text files, open them with notepad or if you are using linux, use emacs text editor

Hi Merovingian

I am interested in your new 5 stage design could you provide more details about how the coils are driven? In another thread you describe an arrangement with one IGBT for switching and five SCRs to select each coil in turn but I find it difficult to visualize without a circuit diagram.
In particular is this a dump and quench topology or half bridge? Are you using one big capacitor bank or one bank per stage? Will timing be open loop or are you using feedback from optical gates.
