Yeah I've tried it before and it's quite hard to get started:
I think the aluminium oxide layer gets in the way. In the end I used gallium to break it down. You could probably use HCl instead, which is something I've been meaning to try for a while now.

Also try using a better source for the aluminum, a lot of cans are alloys and have layers of anodizing and plastics covering the actual aluminum. A good bet would be to use an aluminum bar from Home Depot, it's like $3.

A simple source for Al is Al foil. Cut or tare into pices ~ .5 inch X .5 inch. Place into a container and add a solution of NaOH (20% NaOH solution). Allow the sollution to remove the oxide for about a minute or so. Drain the solution and rinse several times with fresh DISTILLED h2o.
