Rediculously Simple/Sensitive Electroscope

Awhile back I read this neat little online article about an ultra-sensitive single-FET based electroscope. So when I was placing an order with Digikey for some DRSSTC parts, I threw in like 20 of these FETs and a bunch of LEDs; they're only a few cents each. So far I've only fully assembled one, and it seems to work great, which is saying a lot because in South Jersey right now its like 90 degrees and 100% humidity. You can just touch a comb or any plastic object to your hair or even fabric shirt and it will activate the sensor from a few inches away.

The one described on the website has it mounted on a 9V battery clip; mine is just superglued to the battery, and mine also has a switch and a 2 inch magwire antenna. The CRT TV really does screw with it, as does being near power lines, and I think it also reacts to approaching thunderstorms. I have yet to test it with a van de graaff generator, but that should be interesting. Theres some pics on the site of someone who built an array of like several hundred of these so you can visualize e-fields.

And I haven't tested it in the vicinity of my SGTC yet, but that should be pretty cool if it doesn't overload the FET.

I played with one about a year ago. Great fun and really simple and cheap to make.

I have done this with a small MOSFET and dataloged the variance of e-field over a period of time. I stoped experimenting with it because of leakage into the gate.
