When you build an old style NST powered non-solid state coil, do you rectify the NST to charge the capacitors or do the caps actually charge and discharge with the AC? The more I read the more I am getting interested in building a Tesla coil after my laser project is done. Can someone give me a link to a decent beginner site? (so I don't ask many more dumb questions LOL). Thanks!

Nope, you don't have to rectify the NST.

No you don't rectify the NST, you charge the caps 120 times a second (each pos/neg cycle of the 60hz wave coming in).

Have you read the 4hv wiki for tesla coils yet?

Your caps are built to a calculated "resonant" value, a certain capacitance (usually 5-20nF, larger for more powerful NSTs) so that they charge fully in one half-cycle of the AC sine wave, before the current reverses.

Cool, one question are these caps that have no polarity? (unlike the electrolytics I unfortuanatly choose for my laser PFN?) I'm thinking this because if they charge 120 times a second and not 60 times a second with the incoming 60HZ waveform it confuses me a bit. I'm thinkign they charge both ways and dump both ways. I will definitely read the wiki article tonight! Thanks for the reccomendation!!!
