Hi I'm new to coiling, and I saw a bunch of these caps at my electronics store to day for $2.50 each. I'm wondering if I can use these on a coil that I'm building. I'm going to have a 15KV 30ma transformer as my coils power supply. If anyone can tell me if I can use these and how many I need to buy that would be great.

It says on the capacitor:

TRW
663UW
.47MFD±10%
1000VDC

[Edit: Image size 400 pixels] Sorry! suprised

At first glance to my untrained eye, they "look" OK. But... I couldn't find any information on them, and at the price, you should be able to get a reliable capacitor we know all about. The CDE caps are $2.78 last I checked if you buy 52 of them from Rell, and just over $3 individual. A little hunting may find you a better deal on a comparable cap. Just saying... If they were a $0.10 or something, then I would be really excited. Plus, it doesn't look real new or taken care of.

Will they give you any more info on them?

Of the top of my noggin..., you would need to buy about 30-35 of them to match your NST. That's why I would be cautious because an MMC for that thing will be a considerable investment.

Thanks for the help Scavenger. I don't think that they will have too much info on them as it's not a very organized store, and they were in a big unmarked box.

Do you think anything from Amazing1 would be a good deal for me?

I'd go to CDE.... the 942C line of capacitors are simply the best deal around and usually quite a low price... damn damn fine MMCs!!

Doing a bit of Googling, it looks like TRW's 663UW series of capacitors are Mylar/polyester. If so, they will definitely NOT make good MMC caps.

Which ones should I get because there's pages and pages of them? Can someone tell me how big of a capacitance I should have to match my transformer (15/30)? Thanks for all of the help.
