Those toroidals are nice, but $74 for a transformer is alot when im saving for university (B. Applied Science, starts in july yay!). I'm going to rewind a MOT as soon as I have the time.
As someone mentioned above I could cut the earth of a computer PSU and series them, I might try that tonight, I'll let you know how it works out.
...I have to wait until late at night / early morning to do flyback 'experiments'. My neighbour came around yesterday complaining of tv interferance (not surprisingly completely knocks the signal out).
EDIT:
I've wound a larger (~100uH) inductor as well as modified a computer PSU as mentioned above, with them in series I get approx 4 to 6cm arcs, and the longest was approx 8cm, created briefly by quickly brushing the electrodes past each other. When the arc is drawn too far - sometimes it will shut down one of the PSU's - presumably because the current is too great and they turn themselves off to prevent a overload.
Arc's still start at very close range, ie 2mm.
Here is a video of arcs between wire and a 5cm tall iron weight. Sorry about the video quality, its from a 4 year old digital SLR camera, and is infact set in full-lighting.
