Hi
Before anyone asks I am NOT looking for step by step plans.
I have been looking up the maths of how to make a calculated SGTC, but I got stuck, I have looked on the DeepFriedNeon site for the equations but there are a lot of unknowns and I cannot see how I can work it out. Anyway my main question is can I wind a secondary of about 800 to 1000 turns and above and then work out the primary windings and the capacitor value. I assume the spark gap is a bit if guesswork.

Yes, I have red both of those sites. But I only have one set value and it does not seem possible to work out the capacitor value, primary inductance and secondary inductance. Is is possible?

You aren't as bad at maths as you think: you just don't have enough information to solve the problem. In math jargon, it's underdetermined, IIRC. Your mistake was to only set one value, when you actually have to make some more assumptions.
In practice, that is usually done by winding the secondary first (with around 1000 turns like you said) on whatever diameter of former you can get, making a topload out of whatever you can get your hands on, and then measuring to see what resonant frequency you ended up with. You can now calculate all the other parts that will match it.

I may have misunderstood you, perhaps you really want to calculate the coil step by step. If not, try to download this program, it will make things much easier for you. I use it all the time. There are more accurate programs like this: But somehow, I always end up using Wintesla. To each his own.
