Thats a neon sign transformer so it's AC. Lifters need DC. So if you want to use that transformer you'll need to make a rectifier. Also I'm not entirely sure but I think you need more than 10kV for a lifter (not sure though). So I guess you could use it for a lifter but not as is.

I found 28kV to be about the minimum required to get my small triangular lifter to work. As mentioned, higher voltages are nice. My 80kV lifter was able to lift the most mass by far... before it went down in flames (my power supply was a tad excessive).

The NST in that ebay auction looks like one of the new style high frequency electronic ones. They are harder to work with than the regular iron cored type.

Yep, that is defninitely a new high frequency one. I have the exact one and there's a thread around here somewhere about it. I wouldn't mess with it, but anyway as others have said it's hard to beat a flyback.

if you could make a cockroft walton voltage multiplier with 1n4007 and door knob caps you could use that to charge a even larger cap with some series resistance. all componenets on ebay. the flyback is a beter option for powering a dubler..
