2mm looks like very large spacing, check this out: Link2

Stationary electrodes are also heatsinked by big aluminium blocks.

And yes, running a higher speed with 4 electrodes should help, quenching will be faster if anything...

When trying to measure the winding resistance of those transformers, the high inductance of the secondary can confuse an autoranging digital meter. Tip of the day: Try shorting the primary out when measuring the secondary, it will drop the inductance drastically.

I will try a blower gap in series first

Thanks for the tip about the meter and inductances. Will have to try that out soon.

My toroid is made up but had an accident - see Mystery photos. Apart from that it should be just what I want. I will put it in a separate thread since it is a bit different.

My TC got wet today with the rains. I still have 10 days left to get it going before the Discovery Channel shoot.

Pic shows the (wet) primary.

I got 8 foot sparks for the video shoot. Toroid is a chicken wire covered inner tube. Also has a rotating rod on it as standard.
I wasn't able to shoot good pics myself as I was the subject, but my son took these.

Finally got around to another run when the weather improved and I was able to get off work at a reasonable time (hence the cycle gear).
Sparks were still only 8 feet max but I didn't try any tuning due to the short timeframe. So it still needs work.
I am about 12 feet from the sparks due to HV cable limitations. Safe but e-fields still give a lot of charge from me to grounded objects. I need an earthed rod in front of me and longer cables.

Hmmm.. quadruple post but over 48 hours and new info.
I now have a safety spark, gap and a small RC filter inside the power supply trolley. Feed is with R11 coax for each HV line 20 feet long, allowing me to run a longer breakout point.

Also had a chance to change the ARSG speed and seems to go best at about ?300 breaks per sec or less. Much slower than my 4 or 6 inch coils.

Tuning with an 11 ft breakout point is down to 36kHz and I am tuning out to the last primary turn. I still have a lot to do to get it running properly.

Nevertheless here are sparks over a 27 foot area. I need to get to 40 ft for a demo later in the year.
