Hi!
Wow Matt, PM3092 really doesn't look like a common cheapo scope.. Was this the one just ended on ebay?
I will never have money for DEIC420... and I'l never be cool like you!
I won't be ditching my hung chang/labtech very soon...

Datasheet says this baby can do 4nF in 3,5 nanosecnds... I really wouldn't be worried about hard drive anymore!

The only obivous problem left are extremely slow turn-on and turn off times of irfp450...
They are actually already exceeding your period well over so it's a real wonder how that thing works at all!

If you can speed the mosfet up by any mean I guess it would be hard switching the gate as fast as possible... this way you just aren't using all luxuries of deic420!

If you were shopping at IXYS... I wondered if you could have picked up some of their pretty mosfets? They have SMPS mosfets with 4ns delay times both in dei and to247 packages. I'm not sure of their cost but I would expect to247's to be reasonable cost compared to deic420 and I would definitely pick some up along with the driver.

If you really wanted to be extravagant, there are even 1200V ones wich you could run from mains..
Take a look: Link2

Don't feel guilty for anything matt, I as well ditched most of my projects until now, school is finally over for holidays. I have some more ideas I would like to test out!

The scope was a big expenditure, but I didn't spend any money on the DEIC420. I'm already working on some off-line class-E work, but with 1500V devices (I feel the need for some more overhead, that's all).

I have seen projects at 21MHz using the IRFP450 MOSFET... though it may have been the IRFP450LC. Delays do not worry me.

Yes, I've also seen people do various terrible things to IRFP450, but such gross overdriving just results in disorted soft switching very hot mosfet.. hot mosfet has high on-resistance so even conduction loss becomes troublesome (that's what limited out the operation of my little 1,5Mhz coil, I used really tiny heatsink an pushed 200W into it!).

I imagined a faster mosfet could give something more than 1inch arcs for those power levels.

But, use what you have, and try to break 27Mhz with it.. wink

That gate drive IC is a beast! *drools*
We use 10V 0612 SMT low inductance caps at work, Murata I think... they would do the job but better to do without for ultimate performance
