I couldn't disagree more. When it doesn't work first time (well, mine don't, I don't see why yours should) and you come to debug it, you don't have that sneaking suspicion that the design is wrong. You can plug away at it, secure in the knowledge that whatever is wrong can be fixed. If you build something off the forum here, then chances are you can ask the help of others who've built it. Getting down and dirty in the detail is the best way to learn what stuff does.
Once it's working, you might change it. Change the values to see the limits of the design. Change the topology and it becomes your own system. It might work better or worse with the latest change. Better, and you have a contribution to make to the community. Worse, and you really begin to understand why some little tweak that you didn't understand was in there in the first place.
Build the hardware equivalent of "Hello World" first, and go on from there.
