Standard practice seems to be to avoid wood as an insulator around here. I used a 15kv 30ma NST and a little bit of water to put this to the test.
On its own the wood did not arc over but with even a little moisture or the carbon from a pencil was enough to burn deep traces into the wood. The slow motion was filmed at 600fps.

A few months ago I found a new way to play with my van de graff, with enough voltage liquid wax will form points and stream off of a candle on the vdg sphere. Check it out here:
