Wondering if barometic pressure effects sparks jumping (open air) spark gaps. I realize humidity to some extent can effect it, but does barometric pressure also play a noticeable role? (Goggled it, but keep coming up with references to barometric pressure in relation to automobile engine performance). CM

The higher pressure will cause the breakdown of air to increase (so you need to either shorten your spark gap or up the voltage), the opposite happens if the pressure is lower (breakdown voltage decreases) This holds true until you start getting into hard vacuums, where the breakdown voltage will increase dramatically again. Whether or not this is really noticable with our average changes in pressure, im not sure, but I would imagine the difference is very small.

Hi. This might have implications for spherical plasma generation- apparently an experiment was done using artificial "fulgurites" where the inner layer was vapourised by a high voltage discharge, under pressure.
Apparently as the pressure exceeded the point where the membrane over the end ruptured, there were semi-spherical plasma "fireballs" emitted.. but the lifetime was in the milliseconds.
