Here's a project for a rainy day.
Over the last few months I've been saving the switch mode power supplies from various things like VCRs, DVD players. Today I took apart an old 24 port network switch, to find a nice little SMPS inside. It fitted perfectly into the case of one of my 'dead' 13.8 volt supplies, so I mounted it properly, and wired everything up. This particular SMPS has +5v, +12 and -12v outputs, so I just took gnd and +5 and wired them to the front panel. And that's all there is to it!
I'll probably eventually add extra posts for + & -12v, but for what I do 5 volts is the most useful.

Some other SMPSs - From an old DVD player (left) and an even older VCR. No cases for these so I'll just use them for parts.
Those old power supplies can be had for next to nothing, they usually have a ruined regulator or in the case of mine a burnt out transformer I suppose you could use a PC power supply too if you could get it to fit, but network switches seem to contain a perfect sized SMPS complete with useful outputs!

If they work I think it's a pity t 'use them for parts'.
YOu could figure out how to regulate their output, or use them as attractive implement-power supply for various projects, anything you need power for (they lok much 1337er than iron transformer and bunch of large caps)
