I recently took apart an DVD recorder and was able to run the IR Diode with a LM317 constant current source. The beam of the Diode has of course very big angle, so I had to collimate it with optics from a cheap Laser Pointer.
Driving it with 150mA of current makes the beam strong enough to burn and cut stuff.

Well theoreticaly focusing infinity is possible, but practically I lack the proper tools at the moment and basically time to bild something decent. 100m shouldn't be impossible though.
The Diodes often don't have a number and tuning is often not possble without destroying the LD by accident.

Is it possible to use the pre-exisiting collimator and lense system from the DVD player instead of substituting it with another one? Seems like that would be easiest if possible, albiet with some power loss.

optics in the drive are suppose to focus the beam to a tiny dot just a mm or two above the optical head, and is very divergent. not that useful if you ask me.

If I am not mistaken, the beam is focused down to a small spot only at the end of its journey withing the optical assembly. It wouldn't surprise me that if you removed the last lense, you would get a nice colminated beam coming out. If you wanted to cut the size down you could probably just take the first lense after the didoe, I would assume that it is the one that does the colminating.
