i used to use FEMM 4.2, but ive totally forgotten how and this is as far as i get :

the triangle and rectangle should be totally white.

there are few electrostatic examples and tutorials and the manual isnt all that great.

i keep getting lost in procedure and settings boxes.

By 'totally white' do you mean those shapes are conductors?
I think you've forgotten to specify the line segments as part of a conductor.
I mostly do magnetic sims, so I may be wrong.

You could attach the FEMM file.

yes conductor but i dont know how to change them, they all select red at one time. ive imported them as a DXF.

ive gotten to the yellow triangles and full whit conductors, but i get a "singular flag tripped at 0 of 4294" error.

I've never had that error!
If it was imported as a dxf maybe the segments are all grouped? I dont use DXFs so I can't help you there. Usually clicking the 'segment' button allows you to then select one segment at a time by right clicking them, then click the properties button to change properties. 'Conductor' is a segment / arc property.

i redrew a simple shapes model entirely within femm itself. and still got the error. so its not related to the DXXF import process.

i used this program to great effect if you remmeber with the high voltage probes. it was like magic.

If you post the file I'll have a look too, see if anything jumps out at me.

There are 'other' programs. I don't know about 'better'. The only other FEA software thats free that I can think of is Elmer - but I've never used it. It does 3d, and I think theres a workbench that integrates it with FreeCAD. Its something I want to explore, but I suspect the rabbit hole may be pretty deep.
