After two months in the un-illustrated post wasteland, I registered at imgur and came to tell a story.
It's time to experiment with a proportional counter tube that wants more than 2000 volts. Decided to make a supply from parts on hand: small variac, tiny NST, rectifier and capacitor, analog panel meter. The meter has a 0-100 microamp movement and a scale marked 0-120 KOLOVOLTS. Anybody ever hear of a kolovolt? For my purposes, a kolovolt will be 25 regular volts. For ease of use, I added new scale labels that go up to 3000 volts.

I am lucky enough to own a Bertan 0 - 3kV 10mA variable PSU, which I bought for quite a small sum on ebay some years ago, and it has served me well.
In my experience using Russian closed prop tubes, signals are very small, and I needed a low noise charge amplifier as my first stage. But the effort is worthwhile, because, as you know, the prop counter pulses have information in them, height and width, which you can sort into bins, and use as an analytic tool. I found this a bit difficult, I remember, and copied someone else's circuit, but there is nothing inherently difficult about it for an experienced constructor such as yourself. Good luck with it all. I'll be interested to see how you get on. :)
