Hello everybody a friend of mine is making a wacker for ground works, he bought a single phase 1hp induction motor to power his wacker it ran great at 1600rpm but unfortunately the motor has a fault in the windings somewhere so we now have a 3 phase induction motor from a washing machine rated at 480watts at 195v showing 310hz. There is 5 connection 2 seems to be a feedback to provide RPM Sensing to the controller board 2 are live and neutral and 1 is ground, he did not get the controller unfortunately so we need a way to run this motor, can we use mains which many people have done? With a ballast in series? I need help with this as I do not want to destroy his motor. I was originally thinking of using a dimmer but as it is an induction motor I don't think it will work, he cannot afford a VFD controller so any advice would be great

Thanks

Unlikely. If it says 3-phase on the name plate then it will be a 3 phase motor, and those three wires will be for three sets of windings. You will need a 3-phase power source to run this motor properly ie a VFD. Mucking about with single-phase + some capacitors is unlikely to yield a good result.

VFDs go for as little as 50 USD out of china.

Okay I'm inform him it will be best to buy a VFD unless a alternative motor can be sourced. Any recommendations for a new motor?

One from a broken clothes dryer might work? they have long shafts for the drive belt.

As it happens "NNL" has one. What sort did you need as he may trade it for a similar lower voltage motor?

Well I may not need it now, I have applied single phase to the motor and it's powering 1 coil winding, the motor is now using 33.3% of power in single phase but RPM is around 3000 so I'm also making a gearbox using belts to lower the RPM to an estimated 1000 I hope the motor has enough torque to pull the load on the wacker effectively which is a block of mild steel weighing 1 kilogram. Some power will also be lost through the drive system as I'm not using pillow block bearings to hold the load to vibrate the wacker instead I've just used 10mm mild steel plate with machined holes with tapped smaller holes to accompany greasing nipples, the wacker is only needed for 1 job so this way money is saved. If it does not work I will consider the motor NNL has if mine is of use to him and if his is useful to me.

Sometimes you can replace bearings on these, "squirrel cage" motors on microwaves are also effective. Connecting several mechanically in parallel might get torque up if they are all phase locked.
