Hi all.
As part of a "clearout" I found my (presumably faulty ex-equipment) HV resin encapsulated Zappy McPerp (tm) transformers found online.
I had previously cut both prods off each for legal reasons upon receipt and soldering HV/Gnd wires, since found that they were probably defective which is why they had been removed as the primary leads had clearly been soldered before and one showed evidence of internal damage which got disposed of AFAIK, unit *2 only had a broken primary wire which I've patched up with 24 core.

Is it likely that its really no good?
I had a cunning plan to use my SDR downtuned to the low MHz range to make an HV supply for X-ray generation using piezo transformers and a 5642, but this might be somewhat simpler as it is just impulse driven.
(EDIT: Probably shouldn't be discussing this on here maybe move to "Ionizing" ?)

Anyone?

The 'stun gun' type transformers are only capable of brief transformer action before saturation,
but that is enough for the intended application,
I doubt that they would be useful for continuous modes of opertion, such as cw ac.

Hi, upon consultation with relevant authorities they expressed some concern.
I would have to get legal advice on whether the wound component in question is actually legal to own in the UK as it could *possibly* be considered a "weapons component".
As I've permanently modified it from its original configuration it would probably be considered the same as owning a conventional gas BBQ igniter, which *was* legal up until a while back but someone else over here got in trouble.

How in hell can they classify a BBQ igniter as a weapon component? It's a component of a BBQ! I must be one of the most prolific weapons manufactures of the UK with my collection of LOPTs...

You Brits need a 2nd amendment for your BBQ sparkers. Like us American savages, that way you can own rockets, mortars and grenade launchers.

Serious note, this one is almost certainly from a US police unit so probably quite dangerous in the wrong hands. For safety reasons its probably better to delete or lock this thread.

Irony: the transformer is actually out of a gas igniter.
I found a reference to one online, and in fact coincidentally the missing part is the secondary ring capacitor which goes across the coil.
The mini igniters found in Poundland gas lighters use a 3 pin custom IC and a epoxy potted coil/capacitor set to get about 9KV.
(note: in this configuration don't exceed 8mm on the gap or bad things happen!)

Also worth mentioning, it *needs* the Epoxy.
My units still work but one needed a new secondary as it broke down in normal everyday use.
