Hi all. Interesting idea, what would happen if a method of interdimensional travel was discovered, but only those people who were smart and skilled enough to build or access the device (ie university students, academics etc) used it to go elsewhere en masse due to WMDs, politics and other issues.
Assumptions: 1) the AU "Earth" is basically the same as Earth but advanced life never got past the late Devonian era. So nothing much bigger than large rodents at least on land. 2) Atmosphere nearly identical, ozone layer in better shape and oxygen level slightly lower but tolerable. 3) The technology needed is high energy but feasible, similar to an NMR scanner but "needs some components you can't buy at Radio Shack" 4) It only works once every 29.73 years so miss the deadline and it won't work at all. 5) No-one knows exactly *how* it works but it is an extension of a very old theory first documented in the early 1900s and since superseded so the physics community reacts with understandable skepticism up until the point someone shows it working on Youtube. 6) You can only send certain objects. Anything magnetic is out, but something like a flash chip might be OK if powered down. Li-ion batteries etc can't be sent due to CoO2 and other paramagnetic components but things like paper notes and Ti/Mg/etc alloys aren't a problem. Anything based on quartz, piezoelectrics etc should be fine. 7) The "signal time" is about 24 hours either side but to send anything only 20 minutes. It degrades either side of that so the point of minimum energy is about 30 October 2018 at 06.01 am UTC. 8) The other end of the wormhole leads to the same location and some sort of complex built by an as-yet-unknown species.
