Electrostatic demonstrations: electrostatic field pattern of an open cylindrical capacitor

The field lines of an open cylindrical capacitor are visible through semolina grains grains in castor oil, which are in a massive plexiglass box.
Note the field-free space inside the small circle.
After the experiment the semolina grains can be stirred by the small white bar magnet to get back an almost random distribustion of the
semolina grains.

now use a FEA program like FEMM 4.2 to show a color picture of the field density.
