Hi Guys :) I’m doing another slayer exciter board to run a Tesla coil for discharge tubes. Where I previously powered this whole circuit with a second MJE3055T, to modulate the self resonant oscillator with, it now occurs to me that I could instead use a lighter transistor such as 2N3904 to pull the main transistor base down to ground to modulate it. Is there any reason this isn’t a good idea?
It looks like when you stop the oscillator by touching the top load, the self oscillating circuit isn’t able to pull the base low, so the transistor base is left pulled high through the resistor, and it’s emitter/collector remain DC short circuit through the primary until it pops.
So I figure holding the base low with a lighter transistor should keep everything cold other than the new oscillator doing the modulation. Cheers, Brek.
Hi Guys :) Well I gave it a go, and it works, but you don’t have a stable ground reference when the slayer exciter is oscillating. I don’t have a "hands off†way of switching it off yet, but still have to start on the micro for this one.
