I've been looking for a good flyback for some time now with no luck. I've destroyed a couple from old CRTs. I'm looking for help determining an ideal transformer for my needs. My immediate plans are to build the largest jacob's ladder possible with my current power supply and in the future potentially build a small tesla coil.

Currently I have:
-Mazilli flyback transformer driver with good mosfets with heat sinks. I don't mind upgrading parts if required.
-20A 24VDC PSU. I'm considering picking up another for 40A total.

Amazing1 sells:
1000 turn, #34 wire, 60ma
2500 turn, #35 wire, 45ma
4000 turn, #37 wire, 30ma

Which would be best and why?

This may not exactly answer your question, but perhaps if you're destroying flybacks, you should buy some cheap ones to experiment with. For example:

Link2

I have successfully made Mazzilli ZVS circuits using this. You may get 200 to 300 watts tops out of this, but any more and you are going to blow it; the diodes in the flyback will be destroyed. You'll know you've blown it because you'll see corona reaching along the core towards the primary wires. I would five times around the core for each of the two coils on the exposed side of the core.

However, since they are only $7 a piece, you probably can put these in parallel to achieve a higher power rating. For 24V/20A PSU, I think you can use just two of these wired in parallel for higher current or series for higher voltage.

I can go look at mine to tell you which of the pins is the positive pin for the high voltage if you have trouble figuring it out (the negative pin is the cup lead).

Best, Dan

My reservation with using the transformer you linked is that there is no spec sheet. So by playing and learning I won't have any data to compare to a future flyback. Not to mention it has the diodes I've read you should avoid when choosing a CRT flyback.

I've personally been getting mine from 'Rear Projection' tv's, I find them to be of a good size and often in the 35kv range, plus you get a ton of heatsinks and the 50kv wire leads are of good length to re-use.. They are also all over Craigslist for free (depending on locale)...
