Hi, I've actually confirmed that this works, tried it on my test setup and have recovered some data from a defunct 8GB memory card by serial addressing despite no output at all being seen when reading on the SPI bus. I checked to see if there was a variation in current draw when reading a logic 1 versus a logic 0 and there is a slight statistical difference but not enough to be useful. With the modified sensor I invented it can read back bits from anywhere in the array but the lower layers are very hard to get a positive pattern lock on due to the intervening layers interfering with the signal. The setup here was used to get back 25KB of data from midway in the array and confirmed to be a fragment of a JPEG image stored on the chip, so no doubt the FBI's device does the same using their reverse engineered QSD. The same approach can be used on any chip not just Flash as I am currently doing a patent search to see if this is a "novel and inventive step" and can read through the chip casing on a 4S.
Setup is detailed in a later post, writing this all up took longer than anticipated due to having to ensure it can be replicated by a third independent party.

Yeah, April Fools! Its still a mystery how they got the data off that phone though, my money is on a shadowing attack ie take the chip off the board, clone it and run N where N is a very large number of identical donor phones to get the key (eventually) The bad thing is the sheer number of phones needed borders on the absurd, ie thousands. That said with a BGA socket its not like they have to be thrown away after each use so one phone can reliably test over 500+ codes or whatever the lifetime of that socket is.
