Hi all.
Am trying to locate some SiPD or APDs for a project but discovered that the company who sells most of them want a 100 euro minimum order.

As I only need 4 units for my current project (proof of concept) it makes more sense to do a group buy and split it 3 or more ways.
Any takers?
The diodes I need are (edit) AD500-8 (APD) or a small area unfiltered SiPM unit as my current plan is to test different homemade scintillators to get the best match for the target energy.
Looked into those X-ray sensor modules but this likely won't work because it has to be continuous and this is designed only for single shot (flash) mode due to the readout mechanism.

The cheapest APD I've seen is AD500-8 TO52S1 for £10.90 each plus £3 p&p from an ebay seller in China but you can pay ten times as much if you go with Hamamatsu.

I don't have any experience of APDs, but I do know that wavelength shifting plates are used to match the scintillator to the APD.

I don't have any wavelength shifting plates and wouldn't recognise one if I saw it, but imagine they are like unto liquid scintillation cocktails, with primary and secondary scintillators like POP and POPOP - which I do have.

I can't see getting anywhere with APDs and suitable scintillators costing much less than £500 once you've paid someone to machine the plastic scintillator and the optical coupling to the APD, so I shall have to wish you every success with this very interesting idea, while I go to do some digging in the garden.

I can't find anything on PD500-8.

AD500-8 looks good for things I'm thinking of.

I found a Chinese ebay seller that is doing AD500-8 for £5.27 plus £2.43 p&p so I think I'll see what I can do with them and a cube of plastic scintillator I have to hand. Link2

Cool!
I've got an email back from First Sensor AG, they were nice enough to send me some sample prices.
Looks like 100 euros minimum order, sensors I need are around the 14 euro (each) mark.
So comparable with the AD500-8 but about 10-15* more sensitive and also have multimode capability ie can generate analogue data showing some positional information with 2 or more particle impacts which is much more useful.

I don't have any hands-on experience with APDs, but had the impression that Single Photon APDs worked in Geiger mode with reverse bias ~10* higher than APDs like AD500-8, as you suggest.

I still hope that AD500-8 might be useful where multiple x-ray photons are hitting a scintillator block or piece of intensifying film, but we shall see.

Failing that, it's back to soldering dynodes. :)

Have ordered 3 as several projects use these.
Apparently its possible to use a surplus VCSEL out of an optical mouse in reverse mode as a sensor, though its very inefficient and needs lots of tweaking.
Still, if life hands you lemons and all that.

EDIT: Have 3 sensors here, 2 of which are available if anyone wants them. PM me.

The HV850 is very similar but has a narrower voltage window and also only outputs +/-60V (actually more like 57V)
