The 3055t does pretty well with 2 in parallel, I went up to 4 in parallel, but they failed in a short amount of time..
Even better is the 2n3055 (button style), as with above 2 in parallel work nicely...
The best Single transistor one I had used a 2sc47** from an old tv... I pulled 3" arcs from it before a spike/heat killed it..

In Russia we call this 'kacher'.
Actually it is a direct-feedback SSTC.
Take it to e-klasse and you can get streamers as long as 1 - 1.5 lengths of secondary winding lengths.

My last power transistor is exploded. Little pause. I'll be back!

I tried with a mosfet, and it worked too! But becomes rather warm...

Here is a fairly efficient driverless mosfet design, It is not quite Class E and can run continuous , but performs well/better with an interrupter such as 555 timer with < 10% duty cycle..
There is a thread here by Shaunn(?) i'll link the youtube vid of his...

I think this setup while working probably leaves the fet in the linear region thus adding losses/heat ... Be sure to protect you gates!
EDIT::
Also with the pic I provided, The primary coil likes to have a lot of turns, start with say 15 then adjust from there, removing one or 2 at a time, even better is a bifilar winding with 5-7 turns(each)

In fact you had a reply in that thread as well.. circuit works well :)
As far as the circuit you showed, with the low voltages I would definitely add more turns on the primary.
Start maybe with 7, test, remove one, test etc.. or start with more.

Also adjusting your topload can help.. I found Soda cans work well and have a fairly consistent value. Can even use a book and razor blade to cut them shorter / combine into one, razor goes into book to hold steady, twist can along tip of razor, scratching as you go.. almost like cutting copper pipe.
