I was afraid to use semiconductors for Tesla coils, but with the 'slayer exciter' it wend all very smooth without fallout. Spark is 1 mm, but TL-lamps can lit at a distance from 20 cm!

1456045522 2899 FT0 Teslaslayer

Perfect for the semiconductor-beginner!

I always wondered why they gave such a high EMF without much spark discharge, why is that they're high frequency?

This is exactly where I started...
What I found was using JavaTC (TC designer) you can get your component values and tune it more appropriately.
Adding the tuned capacitor from Collector to Emitter (you may have to reverse the primary leads) 'should' help increase output.

Forgot to add, This setup runs in continuous mode, so the transistor may get HOT, .. adding an interrupter will help reduce the current draw.

I will try this! Thanks.

You may also find that with lower voltages, more primary turns could increase output a bit as well

Very strange! This Radiometer does not turn close to a regular Tesla coil, but with the little Slayer...

What is going on?

The pressure inside the radiometer is relatively high, so the lower average currents and field strength from a traditional spark gap coil isn't enough to excite the gas inside. The high average field strength and currents from a SSTC running CW can excite much more difficult tubes, even a small low power one like a slayer exciter.
