I was studying the trigger circuit for the flashlamp in the small Nd:YAG laser here Link2
and have looked again and again but cannot find an explanation for some component placement;

1) R5 and R6 300kOhms @ 1/2W total...aren't the resistor power ratings here way too small? 900Vin regulated to 240Vout takes about 1.45W total resistor power, however, in the schema only 1/2 Watt is available--what am I missing? Resistors really get hot at rated power!

2) PLEASE...what is R7 (82 Ohm @ 1/4W) for? Won't C3 simply be charged through T1's primary? Even if xfmr pins 1 & 3 are not directly connected together pin 1 is still grounded--the resistance between the trigger transformer pins 1 & 2 are sub ohm, but another resister in parallel won't help here???. Also R7 shorts the primary coil of T1??

4) the 0.5W Zener is using 0.53W--maybe no big deal, unless 3/4W Zeners are readily available and good design is important!

5) Really just noticed this one--the function of RY1--not obvious to me. I was also under the impression that vacuum relays were really $$$$.

I have the entire and original SSY-1 parts including the Q-switch to experiment with--especially with tuning critical damping. I plan to scope, during the total firing duration, the lamp current, voltage and sample the direct optical output through the bulb with a reversed-biased photodiode. Then for a very large ruby laser.

I would try a quick spice simulation to see the power levels etc

2) maybe some sort of damping resistor or for shaping the ignition pulse?
5) will be a safety device for bleeding out the PFN cap (C1).
I like D3 that's a nifty idea.

When you come to measure the high current pulse can you tell me how you have done it. I am looking to do the same type of thing.

RY1 is for discharging C1 (when the power is off, C1 is shorted through R1)
0.5W zener? The only zener I can see is 5W

Maybe R7 is there to cause sufficient load current for the scr to latch on, the trigger transformer is mainly inductive, with an effectively open secondary.
