Giving win10 for free seems only proper, considering the lack of functionality in windows 8 through 8.1 but does it ever install?
I have tried 5 times now, gone trough "keep everything" to "keep nothing", using the media creation kit and the download notifyer, even uninstall the custom start menu that I bought, to get at least a resemblence to the excellent win7 which I still admire.
Each time I end up with 0xC190010 - 0x20017 error in SAFE_OS during BOOT.

Now I have a laptop, still with win8.1, but without a start menu, what a piece of crap. I don´t want to learn a new operating system, just want a functional windows.

Is this the rule or the exception?

I've also heard, that Kaspersky AV might be a problem.

Finn,

I have Win 8, all I did was install Classic Shell, and that works fine for me, up until one of the raging apps throw a "coming out" parade on my desktop, but I just hit the windows logo key and stick them back in the closet...hahahah.

Anyway, classic shell helps.

Another data point. Friend installed 10 over previously working 7 (as you do) and now it has locked him out of the system. Password previously worked, there seems to be no "Undo" option.

I had an issue that locked me out of my laptop when i installed win10 (explorer kept rebooting because i chose not to download updates before installing) To fix it i have to revert to win7 and reinstall. To revert to win7 on my laptop i did the following.
1. Spam f6 while booting to launch automatic repair.
2. Troubleshoot > See more recovery options > Go back to previous build

This reset it back the the state it was in before installing windows 10.

the upgrade from win8.1 to win10 was the easiest change of OS that I've ever done !
everything went smoothly with absolutely no problems so far .. kudos to Microsoft.

I did do a win8.1 update just before the upgrade,
and since the worst malware is unstoppable (Microsoft/NSA/CIA/FBI etc.) I only use Microsoft shield etc.
so no third party anti-virus software to contend with.

After the upgrade I ran speedtest.net ... no change (54 down / 3 up)
even the old personalisations remained.
I have been looking for a reason to complain ... so far nothing.

Since my win8.1 is fairly new and worked fine I was hesitant to upgrade,
since I know Microsoft et.al. want easier access to my IT activities, which I do not like
but since win10 is unavoidable long term, I upgraded anyway.

If you have the original windows 8.1 media you can try to refresh the installation: Link2

If you find computers frustrating you should try to get someone else to do it.

I'm still waiting to see a compelling reason to upgrade. I'm perfectly happy with the way 8.1 runs for me.

Win7 pro works for most of the CAD software, and games.
Win8+ very often has issues...

Win10 has built in spyware (on by default FYI) and adware... even the card game will spam its users...

The Win10 model is now like an inferior iOS, but with dwindling market share like the Blackberry OS...

We will not be holding MSFT shares this year...
