I started building VTTC using a Soviet knockoff 833A based on Steve Ward's single tube 833A VTTC design a few years back. Being dirt poor at the time I ended up shelving it. Now I've got some money and some time I'm back to building it.

I looked on ebay for some sockets but they all seem to be selling the same socket. It looks pretty crappy and poorly made, doesn't seem to have anywhere to attach some nice heavy gauge too and they want about AUS$50 for it plus shipping.

Does anyone know a better source or have one for sale?

I could look at our monthly hamfest on April 11. Link2 What would be an acceptable price?

[edit] Now that I see what the 833 looks like, what do you have in mind for a socket? Are individual pin sockets acceptable? Will you depend on them for heat sinking?

Here is one solution: Link2

I'm not using it as a heat sink, individual is ok, and I would prefer if the socket can be tightened around the legs with a bolt or screw instead of being spring loaded.

Also, I don't need a socket for the top two connectors. The socket is mostly to keep the tube upright and firmly in place.

As for price, I have no idea what is reasonable here.

Hi Kyle.
Would you mind measuring the filament pins of your tube(s)?
I found a RCA datasheet giving diameter as 0.437" (7/16" or 11.02 mm). Link2
And a site offering Russian GU-48 as a substitute. Same pin spacing, but the diameter is 12 mm. Link2

How about using brass plumbing fittings drilled out to the right diameter, and mounted on a sheet of cementboard? One could saw some longitudinal slots, then tighten with hose clamps.

There is a seller on ebay selling these kind of DIY sockets, check it out: Link2

Well...
are your tube pins 11 mm in diameter or are they 12?
I bet I can come up with something elegant and inexpensive. We may be blessed with a "serendipity of fit", a delightful thing when it appears.

11.8mm is what I measured with the calipers.

Don't worry about it, I'll build something myself.

In the shop for an unrelated job,
I found a scrap of 1/2 inch thick aluminum and whipped up a clamping pin socket. Tools used: drill press, hacksaw, threading tap.

Here it's clamping the same 15/32" twist drill that finished the large hole.
For more adjustment range, we could saw away the red-colored areas.

Does anyone know if this style of clamp has a name? "Bicycle seat post clamp" sounds too narrow.

'Clamp'??

The same mechanism is used on motorcycle front forks, what's called a 'yoke' this side of the pond, and a 'triple tree' your side of the pond.

Yoke used for oxen:

In case these suggest other approaches, here are some sockets I saw at flea market in 4/11.
