I currently use software for documenting my schematic designs and laying out the PCB using PC software. I have heard some mention Eagle.

Any suggestions for software for the iMac? I currently use ExpressPCB and PCB Wizard.

Thanks

Use kicad: Link2

Its open source and is competitive to eagle. A lot of open source hardware projects use it now.

It also has the added advantage that schematic capture is separated from PCB layout. You assign footprints to parts in a separate step. This makes managing part libraries simpler as you do not have anything footprint dependent in your schematic.

+1
I always use kicad for my projects, start to finish. free and powerful.

I would consider that a DISadvantage.

How so? I don't like having 10 different resistors in my schematic library that are only different in their footprint. Or three versions of an IC.

Decoupling the two reduces redundancy and makes it easier to reuse footprints. I can change footprints without mucking around with my schematic.

.... schematic capture is separated from PCB layout.
I have a pet peeve, and that is cases where
1) schematic figures for IC's are drawn to match the physical layout of the pins
and 2) functional readability of the schematic is compromised as a result.

Schematic figures should have inputs on the left and outputs on the right, no matter what the device pinout is. When hand-wiring a breadboard or plugboard, it's silly to use a physically congruent but functionally obfuscated schematic. That's what layout drawings and netlists are for.
