Well, I've killed two so far... I think it was because I was out of tune with a 15kv NST

And also colored glass can form fractures and conduct far easier than normal, i have few such bottle caps that arc trough and over surface, they cannot keep more than few kV before that happens. Uncolored bottles show no such problem.

Ive had several catastrophic failures with IGBTs and tesla coils.
One-Actually the whole driver just blew up when the bridge failed angry

Two-Roomates friends wanted bigger arcs from my old drsstc. So i hooked up my 10,000uF voltage doubler supply and a 300nF MMC and cranked it up. Large arcs still didnt satisfy them, and by now i was under the influence of beer and peer pressure so i cranked up the on time of the interruptor...wayyy more than i should have. Then a massively thick streamer reached out and NAILED the fullbridge of 40n60s resulting in a nasty IGBT explosion. My guess is that the IGBT was overvoltaed and then the bridge supply just destroyed it.

Three-My current coil. I was hving some bloody mary's this time. I didnt feel like adjusting the phase on the PLL and for some reason swapped the input of the feedback xmfr and cranked on full power with the same voltage doubler. Everything was "cool" till i turned the knob the wrong way n the interruptor and set the on time way high. Next thng i hear is a LOUD bang(which got neighbors upset) and blew another poor 40n60 right to hell. Burned the board too angry

Gotta stop drinking... cheesey

Matt

Once had a 10,000 uF 25V capacitor explode violently during testing of (someone else's) power supply. People who use the same colour wire for everything are asking for Darwination wink

Luckily I insisted he put the lid on first, or else there would have been shrapnel everywhere..

With my alligator clip antics I regularly beg for Darwination. And that's not the least of the reasons :P

I've had a few tiny electrolytics explode on me by accident by overvoltage or reverse voltage. The dielectric pops out and untwists. What happens with larger capacitors? I'm actually quite curious.. have you got photos?

I have had a large electrolytic fail on me. I was charging a bank of 450v caps and all of a sudden around 500v I heard a POP and my multimeter then read 0v. The vent cover popped off one of the capacitors and the case had a small bulge in it but it wasn't that spectacular. I guess the big ones are better at containing any failures. Come to think of it I think I have that capacitor around here some where. I'll take a picture of it if I find it. (I’m a real pack rat..)

Just about a week ago I was blasting some silver acetylide between a spark gap, and I beleive a tiny bit of the resulting silver got between the mains connection on my multiplier, wich was powering the gap. When I flipped the switch for the third time, the traces blew off my board, and tripped my breaker! It was all just to test the multiplier before I cased it. Multiplier was fine, just had to shorten the traces leading to the components.
