Well this has already been labeled extreeeemly dangerous on the last forum but I though I would post it so the new members saw it. exploding wires.

My heart still sinks when I see anyone, I don't care who, grab a hot lead with pliers.

Yup.. Just wanted to make it known that this thread is not to be used for "I blew my self up gooder than you hurr hurr"; battle scars are really not something to be proud of with HV (see that debate in the archives). Interesting stuff that I've seen so far, though. Some of the blown FETs are up there... I wouldn't want to be near that when it happened, though!

One of my most spectacular failure was while charging up a bank of four (two in series)200v 5600uf caps off a camera flash board. Right after the ready light came on, the transistor shorted and the caps somehow discharged through the transistor, completly vaporising it. It was one of my early expirements, so I was already real nervous around the setup. The first failure's always the loudest, dosen't it seem?

You could be spooked by smoking wires and grab a hot lead dead
I had lots of failures with that connecting clips (on low voltages) usually they dont withstand ampere or two of current, mot was obivously too much...

Always use chicken stick from long distances (if something explodes) smile

After that I upgraded to use one of these 20discharger

On the part I hold I rapped electrical tape around foam to make it have a comfy grip. Its also good to make sure caps are discharged. The "buisness end" is just some copper attached again with electrical tape.

About the only really spectacular failure I've had was the time when a diode bridge shorted while charging my big caps, dumping over 10kJ through the charging leads. That was scary. suprised

This was a startle. I was trying to run my flyback off of mains, with a 10W load resistor..... It exploded and scattered burning shards all over the floor. It was a wooden floor too.... cry

I know, real safe setup..... the fuse is a piece of wire, which explains the failure.

A loud bang from my first half bridge DRSSTC, with only 24 V on IGBT gates and insane high ON times.

Enjoy
