It's worth looking at the wikipedia article on 'N rays', for an example of what can happen when an experiment is done by someone who wants to believe in a positive outcome. The modifications make by Wood to show that the effect was not present were simple and obvious, but were not made by the prime experimenters.
Running without power and cooling umbilicals between the stator and armature of the torque balance would similary be a really obvious thing to do, though not necessarily simple due to the battery power required. Allowing for stray torques in cables that can suffer Lorentz forces and cooling pipes that can suffer Bourdon effects is not easy.

This reminds me of the "Pioneer Anomaly" which was a mystery for many years before it was finally resolved to a "mundane" explanation:
The concept of 'Black Body Radiation' was introduced by Kirchoff in 1860. Einstein introduced the concept of the photon in the early years of the 20th century to explain black body radiation.
