Heyo, Its very clearly stated in literature that turning it on at room temp *will* damage it. A lot of literature also instructs users to immediately cool them upon receipt. From what I can tell, this is simply to prevent users from trying to use it by accident at room temp, but some evidence also suggests they may noticeably degrade over time if stored at room temp. Does anyone have any experience to know if toom temperature storage is actually harmful?
Some background: I got an EDS detector off of eBay that I want to try to hookup to my SEM (if I can ever fix those darn vacuum leaks...). Some pictures of it can be found here: It also has a broken window which may have other concerns, but I'll leave that for another thread. I believe its Si(Li) but could be HpGe, I'm not sure how to figure out which (e-mailed BNC hoping they can provide some details)
"Art of electronics" describes the lithium drifted detectors Si(Li) and Ge(Li) as decaying with about the same time constant as fresh fish at room temperature. HPGe can be stored as long as you like. Powering up warm would fry the Preamp FET, Carl Willis has replaced FETs on these kind of things.

I'll take a look in there for details.
Back from BNC: "Detector should be a SiLi 10sq, was last serviced in 2002. Was manufactured to work with a JEOL XS14-J013. ". So, its probably ruined. I have LN2 so cooling it would not be an issue, but if its alredy dead it doesn't matter.
Re: Carl Willis and repair, can he repair the Si(Li)? I think I found his youtube channel and some other stuff. Does he have a handle on the forum?
EDIT: From : "Both HPGe and Si(Li) detectors are fully temperature-cyclable and may be stored indefinitely at room temperature with no degradation in resolution". This directly conflicts with your AoE statement. So maybe this is the source of the confusion: people disagree on what happens! Some say it degrades rapidly, others say that they last forever
