Hello folks...
I currently own a large amount of power electronics and such and i want to experement with driving them and such... however i seem to come across an issue of what to dump a load into. ideally im looking for an old DC motor, somthing like a good 3-4kW DC motor or a large resistive load to dump into.
A motor would be prefured as it seems more interesting to mess with but a resistive load would be good too!
Also looking for huge ferrite cores or cores good for 10-20kHz.
Willing to trade for 450v 1500uF capacitors (i litterally have 100s)

You can buy an electric heater or any other high power passive electrical device as a load e.g. Infrared heater, toaster oven, oil filled radiator, electric kettle .... preferably choose one that has use as a dummy load AND for it's original purpose I use one of these which cost me GBP10.99, search eBay, Argos etc.
At work we use electric firebar type heaters because they can be re-wired to use each element separately or as a three phase load or for 'safe' initial testing in series with dc motor armatures etc.
It's a bit late now but the best time to buy is late winter as they are at clearance prices.
For lower power use filament lamps.
A dc motor as a load has a few problems; with no mechanical load, the motor actually draws very little power large dc motors aren't cheap, used ones are often in need of a serious service, dc motors are heavy and postage costs are high, when you stop applying power the motor acts as a dynamo, it can provide LARGE reverse currents the commutation causes significant voltage spikes
Almost any load that has a winding or coil has inductance, which will give a back-emf 'spike' when disconnected, ok if you prepare for it (a suitable diode is usually sufficient) but can 'over-volt' and destroy semiconductor switches if you do not !!!
