I picked up a couple of Bertan 1836a power supplies to play with 0 to -1kv dc. But I can't get more than 4 volts out of them. I'm putting in +15v & -15v grounded it and jumped pins 8&9 and ... not nothing but only 4 measly volts. I'm missing something, can anyone help me out here?

Try putting 1MΩ across the output which would draw 1 mA at 1 kV - it may be the module is protected against open circuit conditions, and will not function in the absence of a load.

Thank you very much Mary, success! I now have 4 X -1kv power supplies. I think I'll make a marx generator and see what develops. Thanks again, I'm going shopping and I'll start playing.

Oh I'm so glad my suggestion worked out. You may find it will still switch on with a much higher resistance across the output - perhaps as high as 10MΩ, which would draw only 100μA at 1kV - so you wouldn't be wasting so much power needlessly in the keep-alive resistor. You'll have to find the highest usable resistance value by experiment.
