I've just about resigned myself to purchasing a spun toroid. They just look soooooo coooool. But damn! They ain't cheap! The Information Unlimited 24" toroid fits my needs coil-wise, but costs about $400. That's about half a year's "hobby budget" for me, so I'd love to know if somebody else has one (doesn't have to be the same exact size) and likes it.

Regards,
Aaron, N7OE

Contact Dr. Resonance. He may have some toroids left over from the bulk buy.

John Freau Link2 sells them, you can't get 24" but you could stack a couple. He gets great reviews.

I purchased a few of these and they are acceptable for the price. I bought 1 8"x2", and a couple of the 3"x12" toroids. I put the 8x2 one on my small DRSSTC with good results.

Actually, the toroids by John Freau, are not just acceptable, they are outstanding for the price.

Yeah, I've heard loads of good things about John's toroids. I just really need something bigger! Too bad, really, since his prices are so good.

My need for a larger toroid arises from the somewhat unusual nature of the secondary more than simply the desire for more pF's, since the secondary will be immersed in oil within an 18" diameter ceramic insulator. There is a large, sharp-edged aluminum end cap on the top, and I'd like for the toroid to exceed the diameter of that end cap. I've got some nearly 24"-diameter corona rings that I'd planned on using as grading rings underneath the toroid, so a toroid with a diameter greater than 24" would probably be even better from an aesthetics perspective.

Lastly, stacking toroids would put me even closer to the ceiling of my garage, something which would seem to encourage strikes to various objects up there (garage door rails, for example), thereby contraining the coil's output a bit. Not a huge issue, but I'd sort of hoped to keep the thing as short as possible, since I don't have much control over the height of the secondary in this particular situation.

Regards,
Aaron, N7OE

PS: And yes, I know that an oil-filled secondary is perhaps pointless. I'll blame Terry Blake for his inspiration there... smile

The spun toroid (6x24) i got from the tesla list bulk buy is absolutely perfect. Johns toroids are a very close second, only because his still have a seam. The seam doesnt make any difference to performance, and actually, you can take the toroid apart and repair a dent if needed.

The toroids ive seen from IU look mis-shaped from the ones ive seen first hand. They are still smooth and everything, just not a *true* toroid shape. I havent seen anything bigger than their 12" toroid, no idea how their 24" would look.

Seamless sounds cool. How many $$? I mailed Dr. R. about availability, but haven't heard back yet.

I dont know the exact price since i got mine second hand through a trade. I think they originally were around $300 for the 6x24". He also did something like 8"x32" (something in that ballpark), but again, dont recall the price. Here is a picture of my toroid:
